‘Women with Gunpowder Earrings’ wins Belgium jury prize

The Millenium International Documentary Film Festival in Brussels has honored Iranian director Reza Farahmand’s acclaimed film ‘Women with Gunpowder Earrings’.  

The Belgium film event granted the Grand Jury Prize for best documentary feature to ‘Women with Gunpowder Earrings’.    

Farahmand’s latest production tells the story of a female journalist named Nur. Nur covers stories about Syrian and Iraqi women and children in the war against the Daesh terrorists.

Iranian film scholar Leila Hosseini was a member of the international competition jury of the Millenium festival, which took place in the Belgian capital from March 22 to 30, 2019.

Award for best feature-length documentary and best director from the 11th Cinema Verite - Iran’s major international festival of documentary – is one of the many honors received by Farahmand.  

The doc was also nominated for the best film from the audience's point of view at the Germany’s 2018 Dok Leipzig.

 ‘Women with Gunpowder Earrings’ previously took part at the 71st Locarno International Film Festival in Switzerland and 15th International Documentary Film Festival ZagrebDox in Croatia as well as the 8th ÍRÁN:CI Film Festival in the Czech Republic.

Jury of the 16th Signes de Nuit International Film Festival in France recently awarded the doc and released a statement on ‘Women with Gunpowder Earrings’ where it hails Farahmand’s bravery for taking the camera close to the subjects, giving the audience a glimpse into the severe tensions on the front line, and people’s suffering.

The Millennium Festival highlights films whose themes are linked to the major challenges and objectives of the 21st century, and which reflect humanity's dreams and ambitions for a more fair and equitable world.
